Likening US policy on migrant children to Nazis an exaggeration: attorney general

Sessions: harsh migrant policy aims to end 'lawlessness' Jeff Sessions: Migrant Policy Not Like Nazi Germany Because Nazis Kept Jews From Leaving Country

Just hours earlier, a reporter asked Homeland Security secretary Kirstjen Nielsen if the department is "intending to send a message" with its family separation policy. "If you can't tell the difference between what was done to 1.5 million Jewish children during the Holocaust, and what is going on today with the disgusting situation on the border, then you have no reason to be in a position of leadership".

On Friday, the Department of Homeland Security reported that almost 2000 children have been separated from their families since last month. "Gen. Sessions, what's going on here?".

'In Nazi Germany, they were keeping the Jews from leaving the country'.

Sessions said the issue was "whether we want to be a country of laws or whether we want to be a country without borders".

Of course, comparing Nazis and the Holocaust to anything generally discounts the suffering and persecution that Jewish people and many other minority groups endured, and making such comparisons are often gross and mischaracterizing.

Trump claims Canadians are smuggling shoes due to pricey tariffs
Large U.S. companies with significant overseas business were hit especially hard. "Attitudes seem to be hardening". Trump said Americans are now being taken advantage of when it came to trade.

Yoder earlier on Monday responded to almost 60 Johnson County officials asking him to put an end to the forced separation of families caught crossing the US southern border illegally.

But that doesn't make Sessions' response any less boneheaded.

Or, he could have tried to explain that at least these immigrant children, many who don't know English, some who are as young as toddlers, are now expected to navigate the immigration system themselves and plead their cases to a judge to explain why they should be able to stay in the U.S. Sessions also pushed back against claims that the policy has echoes of Nazi Germany. But this is still a really fucked up situation for the children involved, no matter how much you despise being compared to a Nazi. In a departure from President Donald Trump, he did not place blame on Democrats in Congress. Sessions spoke to host Laura Ingraham on her show, "The Ingraham Angle", and said the administration is "doing the right thing".

"I see that the fact that no one was being prosecuted for this as a factor in a five-fold increase in four years in this kind of illegal immigration", Sessions said. Dianne Feinstein's comparisons of Nazi Germany's death camps to the shelters housing children separated from their parents and unaccompanied minors who crossed the border.

The interview continued with Sessions falsely claiming the migrant children are living under "good conditions", all while insisting that these separations don't happen for families who seek asylum in America through the proper immigration channels.
