Curated: IGTV is focused on the creators you love most and already follow on Instagram.
"We launched IGTV (a button inside the Instagram home screen, as well as a standalone app) at an event featuring numerous Instagram creators who'll make it great", the company wrote in a blog post late on Wednesday.
Earlier this month we reported that Instagram was working on a new feature that would allow video longer than a minute, and up to an hour-long. Creators take their followers from Instagram to their new IGTV channels. When you follow a creator on Instagram, their channel will show up for you to watch.
IGTV starts playing as soon as you open it, so you don't even have to search to find content.
Somewhat interestingly, the main Instagram app will also have a tab dedicated to the same videos. In a kind of TV and YouTube hybrid, the app will be organized by channels, which will just lead you to each creator's page.
The standalone IGTV app will be rolling out to iOS and Android globally over the coming weeks.
In the future, Instagram plans to offer a way to monetise for creators who are investing their time into producing videos.
The number highlights the surging growth of the Facebook-owned social network which allows users to share photos and video. But knowing how Facebook and Instagram usually handle these things, we should be seeing ads or some kind of monetisation of the feature within the next year or so.
However, "smaller and new accounts" won't be able to upload hour-long clips immediately, the tech news site adds.
Mobile first:IGTV is built for how you actually use your phone: vertical and full screen. Courting stars to post videos on their platforms is part of their strategy.
What do you think, will you be watching IGTV?
Of particular interest to Instagram will be those with sizeable social media following already.
IGTV videos automatically play from one person's to the next, but you can still swipe right or left to skip between videos.
