Apple admits MacBook keyboard flaws, promises free fixes Apple admits its computers are broken

Thankfully, Apple has finally acknowledged an issue with the keyboard on certain MacBook and MacBook Pro models and will now replace the keyboard free of charge where the key (s) "feel "sticky" or do not respond in a consistent manner". Anyone who might have already paid for a fix that would now be covered for free can contact Apple about getting a refund.

If you do own an impacted MacBook or MacBook Pro laptop, you're going to want to keep this page bookmarked. The company has extended the warranty for keyboards for nine affected models released starting in 2015 to four years from the usual one year.

In 2015, Apple redesigned the MacBook keyboard, but it hasn't gone well with the users as the company expected it to. The so-called "butterfly" keys allowed for a much lower-profile keyboard with reduced travel distance when pressed.

In a post made on its Support section today, Apple admitted issues with its MacBook and MacBook Pro keyboards that users have reported for years.

The problem, caused by a faulty butterfly key switch mechanism, caused numerous laptops' owners to experience keys that stuck, or failed to function as intended.

Apple now faces three lawsuits over the keyboard flaw. While opinion was split over whether the keys gave as pleasing a stroke-feel as Apple suggested, more worrying were the growing number of people claiming their keyboards had exhibited faults.

Apple forums are overflowing with reports of Geniuses who have told customers that Apple is "collecting data" on the issue. But in the meantime, consumers can at least get keyboards that are having problems repaired at no cost-other than some of their time, of course. That has to take place at an Apple Store or authorized service provider, too, which means owners have been left without their computer for periods of time.

In April 2018, Johnston wrote a follow-up story that even after a replacement of her first keyboard, problems arose again, and she sold the laptop back Apple. It may include replacing one or more keys or the entire keyboard, Apple says.
