Defending champion Roger Federer overcame two match points against Benoit Paire to reach the quarterfinals of the Gerry Weber Open with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (9-7) win on Thursday.

With this win, Federer extended his winning streak on the grass-court to 19 matches.

Coric had an easy day advancing when Roberto Bautista Agut retired at 2-3 with a hip injury.

He faces Australian Matthew Ebden, competing in Halle at a career high ranking of 60, rallied from a set down to beat local hope Philipp Kohlschreiber 4-6 6-1 6-2 and will face Federer for the first time in his career in the last eight.

Now Federer is having to work to win at Halle, the German replica venue which mimics the All England club, and then make his final preparation at Wimbledon itself before that tournament starts on July 2.

"I m happy I played well when I had to", Federer said.

The victory was the 18th in a row on grass for the 36-year-old Federer, who last lost on his favourite surface in an opening match in Stuttgart a year ago, although the 20-time Grand Slam champion atoned last weekend, winning the Stuttgart tournament for the first time. "You have to react well and I think I did well in the end".

After performing so impressively to cancel out an early break and keep pace with Federer, Kudla failed to deliver in a first-set tie-break - losing the first six points, with predictable consequences. "So I am of course very glad to have made it".

"I think in that match I played nearly ideal", Coric said looking back to Indian Wells.

Ebden couldn't capitalise though, as Federer piled on the pressure with quick fire points to even the match at 5-5 and he served out a blistering 65-second game for a slender lead, but that was all he needed.
