Joe Jackson, the father of late singer Michael Jackson, has died at the age of 89, U.S. media report.

According to the source, Jackson has been battling the illness for a while now and doctors recently told members of the family that he has limited time to live because the cancer can not be treated.

Joe Jackson died on Wednesday morning, TMZ reported.

Michael, who died in 2009, spoke about his father in a 1993 interview with Oprah Winfrey, revealing Joe would watch the Jackson 5 children perform with a belt in his hand and would beat them if they "didn't do it the right way". His tweet appeared to reference long-standing media reports of Joe Jackson's alleged history of abuse in regards to Michael and some of his other children. "They were acknowledged by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002 in a proclamation naming him as Best Entertainment Manager of All Time; he was inducted into Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame in 2014 and his son Michael acknowledged him with a Joe Jackson Day at Neverland".

Piers Morgan, for example, tweeted that he was a "tough, uncompromising, charming & complex man who drove his children from the mean, poor streets of Gary, Indiana to global stardom".

It was Joe who created The Jackson 5 and got them signed first with Steeltown Records and later Motown Records in 1969, which turned them into worldwide stars.

Officially, Joe Jackson was a band manager, taking five of his sons from a locally celebrated pop vocal group in Gary, Ind., in the mid-1960s to global acclaim, acting as the launchpad to superstardom for his son Michael.

He is survived by Katherine, who is 88, and nine of his 11 children. He then set his sights on helping his sons achieve success with their group, The Jackson Brothers - later changed to The Jackson 5.

Joe Jackson's death has left many people reeling, unsure how to feel.

Randy Jackson Junior paid tribute to his grandfather on Twitter as he wrote: "RIP to the king that made everything possible!"

Joseph Walter Jackson was born July 26, 1928, in Fountain Hill, Arkansas, according to his website.

Past year he said he was "truly sorry" for the way he treated them.

In 1949 he married Katherine Scruse, a former classmate from Washington High School in East Chicago, Indiana, who raised their children while Jackson worked at a local steel mill.

The Jackson family was often riven by legal battles, jealousies, money disputes, Joe's philandering and allegations of child molestation against Michael, as well as Michael's eccentric lifestyle. "I came out with some kids that everybody loved all over the world". Michael Jackson. Now I'm mad, real mad.

Jackson focused instead on his daughter Janet, who went on to become a massive star.
