Sharif was also given an eight million pound (RM40.4 million) fine over the purchase of high-end properties in London, defence lawyer Mohammad Aurangzeb told AFP.

The court had ordered the properties be confiscated by the federal government.

After it came to light that the Sharif family had purchased several lavish apartments in London through offshore companies, Pakistan's Supreme Court found that the disgraced prime minister had failed to properly disclose his financial assets - several of which were "disproportionate to his means of income" - and disqualified him from office.

It's the first verdict against the former premier who's faced a string of trials in Pakistan since he was ousted from office by the Supreme Court a year ago.

During the trial, the NAB presented around 21 witnessed to prove that Sharif family can not justify the money trail to buy four apartments in Avenfield House, Park Lane, London.

"We reject this decision", his brother Shahbaz Sharif, who is leading the PML-N into Pakistan's second ever democratic transition of power, told a televised press conference in Lahore shortly after the verdict.

He said that he was the first person who raised his voice against corruption, and protested outside the Sharif family's Mayfair flats in 1998.

Addressing a public gathering in Lower Dir on Friday, he said that Nawaz Sharif has gotten what he had done so far, adding that the ex-PM lied to hide his London properties.

Sharif, who is in London tending to his critically ill wife, is expected to appeal.

Sharif has a history of conflict with the military even though his political career was initially nurtured by military dictator Zia ul-Haq in the 1980s. They have yet to announce a date for their return.

It is a major setback for Nawaz Sharif's party which is contesting the election on all parliamentary seats.

One predicts PML-N riding a sympathy vote back to parliament, especially since Nawaz has sold his disqualification to the electorate as a military-judiciary conspiracy.

PML-N officials also accuse the military of using its muscle to twist the arm of the media to restrict coverage of criticism of the judiciary and military by Sharif and his allies. Khan is also hoping to become the country's next prime minister. He is reinstated by the supreme court but then resigns under pressure and his party loses elections to the Pakistan People's Party of Benazir Bhutto, daughter of Zulfiqar Bhutto.

Following the coup he was allowed to go into exile in Saudi Arabia.

The proceeding in the Avenfield reference began in September and the accountability court indicted Nawaz, Maryam and Safdar on October 19.
