But in the event that doesn't happen the Thunder appears prepared to use the NBA's stretch provision to slash $90 million tax and spreading Anthony's salary for $9.3 million over the next three seasons.

That follows a report from Adrian Wojnarowski and Royce Young of ESPN.com that stated the Oklahoma City Thunder will cut ties with Anthony this summer through a trade, waiving him with the stretch provision or agreeing to a buyout combined with the stretch provision.

Anthony, a four-time Olympic gold medallist and 10-time All-Star, is close friends with new Laker LeBron James.

Oklahoma City was busy this offseason, starting with free agent Paul George committing to stay with them. Houston and the New York Knicks were in tight negotiations last summer, when both Anthony and the Knicks wanted a change of scenery. He can veto any trade, but teams may be intrigued with taking on his salary in the hope of clearing salary cap space in 2019.

Anthony said numerous right things during his time in Oklahoma City, talking continuously about how he'd "accepted" and "sacrificed" for a role as a third banana.

Of course, Anthony has never been much for playing defense, and while he still can be effective as a catch-and-shoot option, he's also a shell of the player he once was. After the season, he said he prefers to play with the ball in his hands more and said coming off the bench is "out of the question".

The views on this page do not necessarily reflect the views of the National Basketball Association or its clubs. He struggled during the Thunder's first-round playoff exit against the Jazz and expressed displeasure in his role. "I personally think he did an excellent job in his first year transitioning his game, working to becoming more of an off-the-ballplayer, being more reliant on other people to generate his offense, and sacrificing a lot".
