Hawaii Becomes The First State To Ban Sunscreens That Harm Coral Reefs

Gov. David Ige on Tuesday signed legislation which makes Hawaii the first US state to enact a ban on oxybenzone and octinoxate. Sunscreens containing these chemicals will only be available to those with a prescription from a physician. In addition, this law does not include products marketed or intended for use as a cosmetic, not does it include sunscreens prescribed by licensed healthcare providers.

There's plenty of push back from the sunblock industry and even some dermatologists, who worry that the ban may discourage people from using sunscreen, thus increasing the risk of skin cancer.

While environmentalists and most residents of Hawaii applaud approval of the legislation, some merchants have anxious the move may hurt at the cash register as about 70% of all common sunscreens now on the market would fall under this ban.

Scientists found that oxybenzone and octinoxate can cause young developing coral to die, as well as bleaching, DNA damage, and deformities to the reefs. If the ban is passed, it would take effect in 2021.

State Sen. Mike Gabbard proposed the bill for the first time in May, which is expected to be effective by 2021. Consumers will instead have to buy reef-safe sunscreens lacking the chemicals.

"Some of our products contain FDA-approved amounts of oxybenzone and octinoxate, active ingredients that are created to protect skin against the damaging effects of ultraviolet light and provide critical broad-spectrum protection from both UVA and UVB rays", the company said.

Sunscreens containing chemical substances harmful to coral reefs will be banned in the U.S. state of Hawaii from 2021, USA local media reported Wednesday.
