Pompeo and his team of USA negotiators arrived in Pyongyang just before noon, where he was met by vice chairman of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) Kim Yong Chol, foreign minister Ri Yong Ho, and director of department at the State Affairs Commission and Kim Jong Un's chief secretary Kim Chang Son.

The talks lasted almost three hours and it was uncertain whether Mr Pompeo would meet Mr Kim.

Analysts say, however, the takeaway message from this latest satellite intelligence is that North Korea's leader is highly unlikely to dismantle his nuclear and chemical weapon arsenals within a year, as White House National Security Advisor John Bolton suggested during a July 1 televised interview. "We both hope that's true", Pompeo said on Twitter after a phone call with Trump as he headed for North Korea.

Trump and Kim's historic summit produced a handshake and a signed agreement between the two countries but offered little specifics for how the North would go along with the "complete denuclearization" goal the usa has set.

It is Mr Pompeo's first visit to the country since Mr Kim's historic summit with Donald Trump in Singapore.

During the working-level talks, Tokyo also reiterated its position that sanctions would remain in place unless the North takes concrete steps toward denuclearization, the sources said.

The U.S. delegation includes several State Department officials and other members of the administration.

US plans for dismantling North Korea nukes may face resistance
In a Sunday interview with Fox News, President Trump said North Korea is (quote) "very serious" about denuclearization. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, a noted basketball fan, didn't appear at the gymnasium on Wednesday.

Pompeo will stay in the Paekhwawon, or 100 Flowers Garden, a prestigious guesthouse where former South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun stayed during his summit with Kim Jong Un's father, Kim Jong Il, in 2007.

Although the talks have yielded nothing so far, Trump has spent the weeks since his summit celebrating it as a major success: "We signed a wonderful paper saying they're going to denuclearize their whole thing".

Secretary of State Pompeo is in North Korea for a third meeting.

Pompeo has been tasked with making a detailed plan with the North Koreans for these; if he returns home empty-handed or makes a deal for only a minor part of the entire process, skepticism will grow among USA government officials and experts that Pyongyang is not really committed to denuclearization.

Kim has committed to denuclearization as a way to prevent a USA attack.

A day after the summit, Trump announced that the US was canceling joint military exercises with South Korea that the North has traditionally called practice for an invasion. However, the department of state said it was not putting forward a specific timeline for the denuclearization process.

Pompeo's talks, which resume on Saturday, will be closely watched in the region. Moon Chung-in noted that while the current relationship between South Korea, North Korea and the United States, was conducive to finding peace for all parties, that could well change.
