Police say the charges of unsafe driving causing death and risky driving causing bodily harm could carry prison sentences of upwards of 14 and 10 years, respectively.

The Humboldt Broncos youth hockey team was headed to a playoff game on April 6 when their charter bus collided with a semi-trailer at a rural intersection in Saskatchewan.

The 29-year-old truck driver involved in the fatal crash of the Humboldt Broncos' junior hockey team bus in April has been arrested and charged.

The head coach, bus driver, a trainer and the team announcer were among the 16 who were killed, 10 of the victims were players.

He was arrested by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) at his home in Calgary, Alberta.

RCMP Superintendent Derek Williams says the investigation took three months not only because it was a mass casualty event, but also because 100 officers worked on the case exhaustively.

Investigators conducted more than 60 interviews and looked at every aspect of the collision, including speed, point of impact and environmental conditions.

The penalty for risky driving causing death carries maximum sentence of 14 years for each count, while unsafe driving causing bodily harm carries a maximum sentence of 10 years for each count as well.

"It's finally come to charges being laid, so we are very happy about that because we don't want that to be ignored at all", Straschnitzki told The Canadian Press. Our organization has faith in the justice system and we will be watching closely as this court process plays out.
