'17 champ Muguruza, finalist Cilic out in Wimbledon upsets

Bouchard knocked out of Wimbledon by Barty Wimbledon: Alison Van Uytvanck beats Garbine Muguruza

Alison Van Uytvanck became the latest underdog to cause a major stir, defeating defending champion Garbine Muguruza 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 in the second round of 2018 Wimbledon.

In the men's draw; Guido Pella, ranked No.39 in the world, beat Cilic in five sets after comfortably winning the first two sets 6-3 6-1.

Van Uytvanck has only ever progressed beyond the second round at a major tournament once before, and admitted she can not wait to try to push into uncharted territory.

But considering that as of Wednesday, five of the top-10 seeds in the women's draw were spending the remainder of the fortnight preparing for the hard-court season, no match at Wimbledon, no matter the round nor tale of the tape, is a foregone conclusion. Falling 5-3 behind in the first set, the French Open champion looked unsettled as she struggled for consistency.

Muguruza, 24, recovered from an early break of serve to take the first set, and then immediately broke the serve of her Belgian opponent at the beginning of the second.

"She played big, took lots of risks and it worked for her. She was playing really good, so it was a little bit tough for me, to have an opponent that is having a great day, and the match is slipping out of your hands".

Muguruza was unhappy that her second-round match had been scheduled as the last game on Court Two on Thursday. However, the three-time Wimbledon champ asked for a trainer to treat a left leg injury, but insists (and certainly played like) it is no concern going forward. It was a mentally mature performance from the 26-year-old, no doubt buoyed by her Paris win.

Muguruza was broken seven times by the inspired 47th-ranked Belgian, ending the Spaniard's hopes of retaining her title.

Third seed Marin Cilic was stunned 3-6 1-6 6-4 7-6 (3) 7-5 by Argentina's world number 82 Guido Pella in three hours 12 minutes. "I don't really think about the seeding now, I'll just focus on my tennis".

The British No 1 reached the semi-finals at the All England Club past year, but hard-hitting Slovakian Cibulkova produced a ruthless display to end Konta's hopes 6-3 6-4 on Thursday.

"When I'm done practicing I go to my house, play video games".

Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal moved a step closer to reaching a first Wimbledon quarterfinal since 2011 when he saw off the big-hitting Mikhail Kukushkin 6-4 6-3 6-4. I am very happy, the way that I played today.

Nick Kyrgios, seeded 15, unleashed 42 winners to see off Robin Haase of the Netherlands 6-3, 6-4, 7-5. A Kyrgios duel against another Australian who has courted controversy, Bernard Tomic, won't materialize after the lucky loser lost to 2014 US Open finalist Kei Nishikori in four sets.

Top seed and French Open champion Simona Halep, however, reached the third round with a 7-5, 6-0 win over China's Zheng Saisai.
