National Hurricane Center monitoring two tropical disturbances

A tropical depression developed in the open Atlantic Ocean Thursday morning, but it may weaken before hitting the Leeward Islands.
Hurricane Beryl is located about 1140 miles east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles and is moving to the west at 14 mph (22 km/h). Maximum winds are 35 miles per hour as it spins over the central Atlantic. A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Barbados, St. Lucia, Martinique, St. Martin, and St. Barthelemy, Saba and St. Eustatius and St. Maarten.
A tropical depression is expected to form over the next few days as this system migrates northwest over the weekend.
Forecasters have been watching the compact storm and expected it to intensify.
In a release issued at 8 p.m. Wednesday, the NHC said the system is about 1,000 miles west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, roughly halfway between Africa and the Caribbean.
Earlier this week, forecasters said an El Niño has a 50 percent chance of forming during the fall with conditions expect to remain neutral through September. It may reach tropical storm status soon and earn a name.
Beryl won't have much impact to anyone, it's a tiny storm drifting through a very unfriendly environment for storms it is surrounded by dry air and high wind shear.
A tropical wave heading for the Caribbean is now a tropical depression and is headed for the Lesser Antilles.
The Atlantic high pressure ridge will continue to influence a moderate easterly wind flow across the region. Even with such a far distance to travel there is already a hurricane watch for portions of the Lesser Antilles.
Some strengthening is possible, and the depression could become Tropical Storm Beryl later Thursday or on Friday.
Hurricane Beryl, a compact storm almost 2,000 miles from North Carolina, is not expected to have any impact on the Southeast coast. From 1950 through 2017, the average number of named storms has been 11 (though from 1981-2010, the average has been 12).
Therefore, even if a tropical depression did develop there would be no direct threat to the US since it would remain several hundred miles offshore.
