The death of a former Thai Navy SEAL diver who ran out of oxygen in the cave on Friday underscored the danger of the journey even for professionals.
As an worldwide coalition of divers continued to rescue a Thai soccer team and their coach from a cave Monday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk was trying to help in his own inimitable way.
The rescue has been underway ever since and eight of the boys are now out thanks to a team of expert divers.
The anxious families say they have forgiven 25-year-old soccer coach Ekapol Chanthawong who led the boys on what was supposed to be an innocent adventure in cave exploring more than two weeks ago.
"The operation is being supervised by the Thai authorities". An ambulance was seen leaving the scene immediately afterward early Monday evening. Musk expects his submarine to arrive in the middle of that window - about 12 hours into the second phase of the operation.
Rescue operations commander Narongsak Osotthanakorn announced the successful extraction of four more "Wild Boars" soccer team members out of the Tham Luang cave and expressed confidence that rescuers would be able to bring to safety the last batch of five survivors tomorrow faster than they did in the past two days. It was unclear who was inside the ambulance or the helicopter.
The acting governor of Chiang Rai state, Narongsak Osatanakorn, said that divers are unsure whether all five can be rescued in one or more missions.
Meanwhile, anxious parents waiting at the entrance - many of whom have been holding 24-hour vigils despite the overnight rains - say they are still not being told "anything" about which boys are about to emerge from the cave, and can do nothing but wait. It takes several hours.
Officials last week said they would bring the fittest people in the group out first, but Narongsak later said that whoever was ready first would be escorted out.
But then oxygen started running low in the cave, and officials also anxious the little piece of real estate the boys and their coach have could be lost.
In comments released by the government, Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda said officials were meeting Monday morning about the next stage of the operation and how to extract the remaining nine people from the cave in the country's north.
The football team have been in the cave since 23 June, when rising water levels trapped them inside.
According to the Associated Press, a Thai official revealed that the healthiest boys were taken out of the cave first.
Authorities have not confirmed the identity of the first four boys rescued.
As days passed, people feared the worst and wondered just how the boys and their coach could survive while trapped underground in flooded caverns.
Workers have been labouring around the clock to pump water out of the cave, and authorities said Monday that heavy downpours overnight did not raise water levels inside. "We can't visit our boys in hospital because they need to be monitored for 48 hours", Mr Somboon said.
Thailand's Meteorological Department said there was a 60 percent chance of rain Monday with thunderstorms forecast throughout the week.
Four of the 12 schoolboys were rescued from a flooded cave in northern Thailand on Sunday before the operation commenced a 10-hour pause to replenish oxygen supplies.
Musk shared via Twitter videos of his engineers testing its "kid-size submarine" - the same one that is apparently on its way to Thailand - underwater in a Los Angeles pool.
He had said fresh air tanks needed to be laid along the underwater route.
The eight boys freed from the cave were quickly transferred to Chiang Rai Prachanukroh hospital, where they were put in isolation to determine they are clear of infection, the Guardian reported.
Authorities have said the mission could take three or four days to complete.
The rescue team also includes divers and workers from Australia, the United Kingdom, and other parts of Europe and Asia. Rescue operation chief Narongsak Osottanakorn says it is "not suitable" to make the boys dive to safety yet.
