Starting with its Seattle and Vancouver locations, Starbucks announced Tuesday it will eliminate single-use plastic straws from all of its stores, giving customers a choice between a strawless lid or an alternative-material straw as an option instead.

The company said it is the largest food and beverage retailer to make such a commitment-a decision that will eliminate more than 1 billion plastic straws per year from its stores.

By the fall, all cold coffee beverages in Seattle and Vancouver will be served with the same strawless lid now offered for the cold brew drinks.

For users who still want their drinks with a straw, the company said paper or biodegradable plastic will be available by request.

Starbucks is saying goodbye to its signature green plastic straws.

The announcement from McDonald's followed an April proposal by the United Kingdom government to ban plastic straws in the country. And it's a part of Starbucks' $10 million investment in creating recyclable and compostable cups around the world. In May, the European Union also suggested a ban on some plastic items, including straws.

Loris Karius influenced by concussion during Champions League final, says Jurgen Klopp
"The only thing I can say is he had a concussion in the game." said Klopp. We don't think about that anymore and we start completely new.

In a statement, CEO Kevin Johnson called the move away from plastic straws a "significant milestone" in the company's sustainability efforts.

It comes a week after Starbucks's United States hometown of Seattle banned single-use plastic straws and utensils at businesses that sell food or drinks in the city.

Local government officials across the country are considering banning plastic straws, and some Charlottesville businesses have gotten a head start.

Starbucks says that customers in Seattle and Vancouver will be the first to go strawless beginning this fall, with more markets to follow.

"With eight million metric tons of plastic entering the ocean every year, we can not afford to let industry sit on the sidelines", he said in a statement.
