North Atlantic Treaty Organisation told AFP that Saturday's killing was the third USA soldier death this year.

"Because of this strategy and the conditions-based nature of it, we, the members of the government, have been able to take bold steps outside the box and articulate an agenda of peace that is truly comprehensive and asks for engagement", Ghani said, citing the recent cease-fire.

Around 16,000 troops from U.S., North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and other partner countries are in Afghanistan, training the Afghan forces within the framework of a NATO-led mission.

American casualties have fallen dramatically since the withdrawal of US-led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation combat troops at the end of 2014.

"An American role will be important in this, but we can't run the peace talks, we can't settle this from the outside", he said.

Starbucks to ditch plastic straws globally by 2020
The announcement from McDonald's followed an April proposal by the United Kingdom government to ban plastic straws in the country. For users who still want their drinks with a straw, the company said paper or biodegradable plastic will be available by request.

The Taliban have also released a statement, saying an Afghan soldier opened fire on USA soldiers in Uruzgan.

One U.S. service member was killed and two others wounded Saturday in an apparent "insider attack" in southern Afghanistan, making it the first attack of its kind on U.S. personnel this year. Two other Americans were wounded in the attack. Western officials say most insider attacks stem from personal grudges and cultural misunderstandings rather than insurgent plots. It was claimed by the Taliban.

Currently, there are about 14,000 United States troops in Afghanistan, providing the main component of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation mission there to support and train local forces.

Maciel was part of Operation Freedom's Sentinel, which conducts counter-terrorism missions targeting terrorist groups like Al Qaeda and the Islamic State affiliate in Afghanistan and also focuses on building up local Afghan forces. Afghan commandos carried out the operation with support from USA special forces and air power. Efforts to impose a ceasefire in the region have been mostly unsuccessful.
