Thailand cave rescuers save eight boys: What we know now

Four Of The Boys Trapped In Thai Cave Rescued Fighting time, high waters, divers prepare to rescue second group of Thai boys from cave

Ambulances have been moved and preparations made Monday to rescue the second batch of boys from the flooded Luang Khun Nam Nang Non cave.

Kanet Pongsuwan, the principal of the nearby Mae Sai Prasitsart School - which six of the boys attend - said that the rescued students will be eased back into the classroom.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha was scheduled to visit the site later Monday.

Emergency crews in Thailand brought a second group of four boys to safety on Monday, more than two weeks after 12 boys and their soccer coach were trapped in a flooded cave network.

TRT World's John Joe Regan said the rescued boys - who remained in the cave without food for nine days - are weak "but they are doing well".

It's a process that can take several hours.

Authorities have said the boys are being held close to divers and wear oxygen masks to enable normal breathing.

Thailand's Health Secretary said last week that on arrival at hospital the boys would need to be quarantined for one to two days before being allowed to see their families.

"All conditions are still as good as they were yesterday", Narongsak told a news conference.

Paramedics, believed to be carrying a boy who has been evacuated after being trapped inside a flooded cave, approach a helicopter in Chiang Rai, Thailand, July 8, 2018, in this still image obtained from social media. "Good night. Hooyah." The boys and their coach, whose team is known as the Wild Boars, became stranded when they were exploring the cave after a practice game on June 23.

Officials lavished praise on the Thai and global divers who executed the risky rescue mission, guiding boys who can barely swim and have no diving experience through a treacherous 4-kilometer-long (2 1/2-mile) escape route that twisted and turned and rose and fell inside the mountain cave complex.

The boys were first discovered by British divers Richard Stanton and John Volanthen on Monday.

Officials told Reuters that Monday's rescue operation would take between 10 and 20 hours.

A vehicle loaded with oxygen tanks is seen near the Tham Luang cave complex in the northern province of Chiang Rai, Thailand.

There's been no shortage of warnings in recent days about how risky the rescue attempt is - not least the death of former Thai Navy Sgt. Saman Kunan, an ex-SEAL, who died early Friday morning due to a lack of air while attempting to return to a command center deep underground.

Narongsak said that experts told him new rain could shrink the unflooded space where the boys are sheltering to just 108 square feet.

The fate of the boys and their coach has gripped Thailand and drawn worldwide media attention.

The four who were rescued were taken to a hospital in Chiang Rai for evaluation.

He did not say how many boys the team hoped to bring out on Monday.

"The rescue has been huge", said volunteer helper Somjit Saenset, 56.

Authorities have repeatedly said the rain could re-flood crucial parts of the cave complex that have been drained and make the escape route much harder or even impossible to navigate.
