Federal Bureau of Investigation agent says his 'blunt' criticism of Trump never impacted his work

An FBI agent assailed as biased by Donald Trump after it emerged he railed against the president in private messages with his lover, said Thursday (Jul 12) such attacks are bolstering Russia's Vladimir Putin and tearing the United States apart.

Former FBI agent Peter Strzok said Thursday that his text messages with another FBI official with whom he was having an affair did not factor into his work on the bureau's investigations into President Donald Trump's ties to Russian Federation or into Hillary Clinton's handling of classified information.

FBI Deputy Assistant Director Peter Strzok testifies before a House Committees on the Judiciary and Oversight & Government Reform joint hearing on "Oversight of FBI and DOJ Actions Surrounding the 2016 Election" in Washington, U.S., July 12, 2018.

"Mr. Chairman, there's no basis for that", protested the top Judiciary Democrat, Rep.

"Only with your own counsel", Goodlatte responded.

"He said that meeting was about 15 minutes and that Mueller had said that he had reviewed the text messages and would be firing agent Strzok", Herridge said. Strzok replied: "No, he's not". Strzok was chastised in a June Justice Department Department of Inspector General report, which revealed Strzok texted "we'll stop it" in 2016, seemingly referring seemingly to Donald Trump's path to the presidency. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Hillary Clinton.

He said he was one of the few people during the 2016 election who knew the details of Russian election interference and its possible connections with people in the Trump orbit, and that that information could have derailed Trump's election chances. "But", he said, "the thought of exposing that information never crossed my mind".

The White House said President Trump is monitoring the hearing from Europe.

"Like many people, I had and expressed personal political opinions during an extraordinary presidential election", Strzok said. "As someone who loves this country and cherishes its ideals, it is profoundly painful to watch and even worse to play a part in". "It is not a witch hunt.

They were trying to throw up any kind of roadblocks so that Strzok didn't have to answer questions".

"To suggest we can parse down the shorthand like they're some contract for a auto is simply not consistent with my or most people's use of text messaging", Strzok said, practically yelling at Gowdy.

But that's unlikely to be the focus of Thursday's hearing.

Thursday's hearing, which was the first public appearance Strzok has made since he became a central figure in the Russian Federation investigation, underscored the deep tensions on Capitol Hill over the FBI's investigations connected to the 2016 election.

One message that has received particular attention, and is likely to be discussed at the hearing, is an August 8, 2016 text in which Strzok, discussing with Page the prospect of a Trump win, says, "No. No he's not. We'll stop it".

Page told investigators that she and Strzok were having an affair, according to a Justice Department Inspector General's report about the Clinton email investigation, and that they used their work devices to hide that from their spouses.

He recognized that some Americans would vote for Trump despite what he believed was unquestionably inappropriate behavior, and he insisted that he took no action to taint the election against the Republican candidate.

Stzok appeared under subpoena on Thursday before a joint session of the House Judiciary and Oversight committees, where he was grilled by Republicans on inflammatory text messages he exchanged with a fellow Federal Bureau of Investigation official in 2016 that were critical of then-candidate Donald Trump.
