Djokovic in Wimbledon semifinals

Novak Djokovic reveals what was his best match in career Djokovic into 10th Wimbledon quarter-final
Cassandra Gardner | 14 July, 2018, 08:48

World number one Rafa Nadal produced a performance of resilience and resolve as he edged past Argentine Juan Martin del Potro 7-5 6-7 (7) 4-6 6-4 6-4 in four hours and 48 minutes.

The No 2 seed had looked set for a comfortable afternoon when he won the first two sets, the second on a tie-break.

That initial burst gave Federer 34 successive sets won at Wimbledon, equaling his own record set between 2005 and 2006.

Djokovic looked in impressive form, particularly as he closed out the final set.

If Anderson is to shock Federer, who has only lost once before the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in 15 years, he will need to call up the heavy artillery which has served him well at the tournament this year.

Anderson, a 32-year-old South African who played college tennis at IL, served it out, ending things with a 128 miles per hour service victor before raising both arms. Early on he was bothered by the glare off the sun, adjusting his serve and then sporting a cap.

Novak Djokovic ensured he will have a Wimbledon rest day on Tuesday after beating Karen Khachanov and the fading light to reach the quarter-finals.

This was only the third time in Federer's 20 years of contesting Grand Slam matches that he lost after taking the opening two sets; both of the other defeats came in 2011. I didn't harm the grass.

Simon failed to convert a break point, then a third match point for Del Potro ended with him netting a forehand. It also took her until her 42nd Grand Slam appearance to finally get through to the last four at a major.

Nishikori still would not fade and he forced Djokovic to go long for an early break in the fourth, but that advantage was swiftly canceled out following another fine rally. "I didn't see it coming", said Federer. "But hopefully I have two more matches to play".

The 31-year-old, who cut short his season last year to treat a troublesome elbow (right), however, went under the knife after falling in the fourth-round of the Australian Open in January.

Addressing the issue in the post-match press conference, the 12-time Grand Slam champion said: "To be honest, I thought it was unnecessary to get a warning". I am very grateful to play on the court I love and to be competing at a high level.

"You think I ruined the court for just throwing my racket (down)?"

And when the world No. 28 could not then beat the net, Djokovic seized the initiative and pressed on for a four-set win. "He's got weapons, a big first serve and a big forehand, but I managed to get serves back and make him play another shot", he added. I don't know how you would break him and that's why it's exciting he is back in the mix.

"Double standards, my friend". But the 12th seed was not to be denied as he raced into the last four, hitting an impressive 40 winners on the way.

It will be Djokovic's 41st appearance in a Grand Slam quarter-final and he will start favourite against Nishikori who will be in his first last-eight at the All England Club.
