The British pound fell, then rallied, and United Kingdom politicians reeled, then steadied as Trump showered praise on Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday - hours after an interview in which he criticized her, praised a rival and gave her hard-won Brexit roadmap a battering.

The couple were welcomed at the palace in Oxfordshire - about 60 miles outside of London - by Prime Minister Theresa May and her husband Philip, before witnessing a performance by the Scots, Irish and Welsh Guards military bands.

May says her plan "provides the platform for Donald and me" to strike an "ambitious" trade deal. She has hosted American presidents and first ladies there before, most recently Barack and Michelle Obama in 2016.

Trump was making his first trip to Great Britain as president after a tense summit with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders in Brussels that began Wednesday and on the heels of ruptures in May's government because of the crisis over Britain's exit from the European Union.

May praised the strength of the U.S. -U.K. bond. "In that horrific war, American and British service members bravely shed their blood alongside one other in defense of home and in defense of freedom and together we achieved a really special, magnificent victory". "This is not an accident".

"She's a very tough, very smart, very capable person", Trump said.

Mr Trump left Winfield House, the US Ambassador's residence, shortly after 9am, doing a fist pump before boarding Marine One. Although the balloon looks quite large from up close, it is dwarfed by the crowds below.

In extracts of an interview with German weekly Der Spiegel published Friday, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said Trump's verbal attacks against Germany endangered the West's security.

Also attending Sandhurst are several of the president's aides, including John Kelly, John Bolton and Stephen Miller.

U.S. President Donald Trump says not to expect a "Perry Mason" moment when he and Russian President Vladimir Putin meet early next week. Trump has previously described the high-tech embassy as a "bad deal." Trump and his wife, Melania, then flew to Windsor Castle for tea with Queen Elizabeth II before traveling to a Trump golf resort in Scotland for the weekend.

While his schedule studiously avoids any high-profile events in London, the British capital will see a mass demonstration and rally Friday, one of several protests across Britain including a tuneful one by a group of opera singers.

May's critics have said, however, that she reins in criticism of Trump, because of the strong desire of many in her Conservative Party to reach a trade deal with the United States after Brexit. Instead, he said, May went "the opposite way" and the results have been "very unfortunate". When I saw her this morning, I said, "I wanted to apologize.' She said, "Don't worry, it's only the press.'" Beyond the apology, Trump went on to praise May". "That's why you have Brexit in the first place, because of immigration". This is an incredible opportunity for our two countries and we will seize it fully."At the same location a week ago, May finally won agreement for her Brexit plans from her cabinet after two years of tortuous internal wrangling".

The meetings are expected to be unusually tense after Trump trashed May's Brexit plans in a diplomacy-wrecking interview with The Sun newspaper that published late Thursday night. "I think they agree with me on immigration".

"It seems like everybody wants me to", he said confidently, despite facing widespread protests on his United Kingdom trip, and criticism over his policies at home.

"They do not have the right candidate", Trump told Piers Morgan in an interview for the Mail on Sunday, when asked if the "liberals could be facing not two more years of you but potentially six". "But when they make you feel unwelcome, why would I stay there?" he said. I just want the people to be happy.

His comments came at the end of a tumultuous few days for May, during which two senior ministers resigned in protest at her plans for trade with the European Union, after Britain leaves the bloc next March. "We had a dinner, where I think we probably developed a better relationship".

Johnson and Davis' resignations have added pressure for May to step down over her handling of Brexit as prime minister.

And The Scotsman newspaper published an op-ed in which it stated, "the 45th US president is an appalling human being".

A giant "Human Rights Nightmare" banner is unfurled by Amnesty International activists across the river Thames on Vauxhall Bridge to protest against the visit of U.S. President Donald Trump, in London, Thursday, July 12, 2018.
