Trump pursuit of Putin bromance highlights policy disconnect

NATO insists it's united at end of raucous, divisive summit Kremlin denied US election meddling just before indictments

Democrats on Capitol Hill said the indictments underscored the need for Trump to press Putin on the issue.

Senate Republican Conference Chairman John Thune, who also traveled to Russian Federation, said Trump should be prepared for complete denials and well-rehearsed answers when he meets with Putin in Finland's capital.

Twelve Russian intelligence officers were indicted on charges they hacked into Democratic email accounts during the 2016 USA presidential election and released stolen information in the months before Americans headed to the polls, the Justice Department said Friday.

A summit between US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin will go ahead as planned despite tension over Moscow's alleged election meddling, the White House has said. US intelligence agencies have said the interference was aimed at helping the presidential campaign of Republican Donald Trump and harming the election bid of his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton.

"As Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said today: 'There is no allegation in this indictment that Americans knew that they were corresponding with Russians".

"They're propagandists. When I read what the Russian press said that transpired in those meetings, I don't know why - I don't believe them when they say they weren't involved in meddling in USA elections", Moran said.

"It is time for this President to stand up for America".

When asked what he would say to Putin about alleged USA election meddling, Trump said he would absolutely and firmly raise the issue.

"They are going to up it to levels like they have never thought it before", the president said.

"On top of it all, Germany just started paying Russian Federation, the country they want protection from, Billions of Dollars for their Energy needs coming out of a new pipeline from Russian Federation", read another. "I don't think you'll have any 'Gee, I did it, I did it".

That initial burst gave Federer 34 successive sets won at Wimbledon , equaling his own record set between 2005 and 2006. I don't know how you would break him and that's why it's exciting he is back in the mix. "Double standards, my friend".

"President Trump should cancel his meeting with Vladimir Putin until Russian Federation takes demonstrable and transparent steps to prove that they won't interfere in future elections", said Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer.

Trump's calls prompted leaders to call an emergency meeting at the summit Thursday, which delayed a session during which North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders had meant to discuss the Afghan conflict.

May has already committed 440 more troops to serve in non-combat roles in Afghanistan and the United States has committed 3,000.

US and Israel want Iran to leave Syria, while Russian Federation has warned it would be unrealistic to expect Iran to withdraw fully from the country.

Graham suggested that Trump "reject [any] denial" of election meddling from Putin and tell him that if he "desires a good relationship, you've got to stop meddling in our elections". Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said he is concerned that the President's "ad-hoc" style of going into meetings and "winging it" is not appropriate and that the meeting should be called off with Putin.

Eighteen Democratic members of the House Foreign Affairs panel urged Trump in a letter to cancel the meeting, saying that "due to your constant expressions of sympathy for Vladimir Putin" the lawmakers "do not have confidence that you can faithfully negotiate with the Russian leader".

Trump and German Prime Minister Angela Merkel discussed the pipeline contention during their Wednesday pull-aside meeting at the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit. He also said during a joint press conference with the British Prime Minister Theresa May that his administration was "tougher on Russian Federation than anybody".

The White House's initial reaction to the indictments was defensive and didn't include any criticism of the Russian government or its indicted operatives, all of whom were identified as officials in Moscow's main military intelligence agency, the GRU. "Time for Mueller to end this pursuit of the President and say President Trump is completely innocent", Giuliani said.

News of the indictment came as Trump was meeting Queen Elizabeth II and just 72 hours before his meeting with Putin.
