Trump says Obama failed to stop Russian hacking in 2016 election

The indicted Russians have also been accused of hacking into the software used by computer companies that run the USA elections.

The indictment was a monumental development in the ongoing Russia investigation because it marks the first time Mueller has directly pointed a finger at the Russian government for its efforts to meddle in the election.

The White House echoed some of those sentiments. Ahead of the meeting, which has already provoked concerns among US, UK and Germany's officials, Trump called Putin a "competitor". The press conference comes as Donald Trump is overseas in England.

The indictment, part of the Russian Federation investigation headed by the special counsel Robert Mueller, describes the details of the transaction. "Free and fair elections are hard-fought and contentious and there will always be adversaries who work to exacerbate domestic differences and try to confuse, divide and conquer us".

In February, he brought charges against 13 Russian nationals who allegedly carried out a campaign of social media-fueled information warfare - some of it supporting Trump and disparaging Clinton - that he said was aimed at meddling in the 2016 election.

There is no allegation in the indictment that any Americans were knowing participants in the alleged conspiracy or knew they were communicating with Russian intelligence officers, the release points out.

Still, the Obama administration has faced scrutiny for not doing enough to stop the Russians, something it is expected to be criticized for in an upcoming Senate Intelligence Committee report.

Mueller indicts 12 Russian intelligence officers... Using these methods, the Russians released "tens of thousands of stolen emails and documents".

"Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing", he said, referring to Clinton's deleted emails from her time as secretary of state.

Trump to talk to Russia's Putin about substantially reducing nuclear weapons
Lavrov also said Russian Federation supports initiatives by the United States and South Korea to engage North Korea. Since coming to power a year ago , Trump has sought to improve relations with Putin.

That evening, the indictment says, the Russians attempted to break into email accounts used by Clinton's personal office, along with 76 Clinton campaign email addresses. Among those targeted was John Podesta, the Clinton campaign chairman. Private speeches she gave to financial industry firms were particularly damaging within the left wing of the Democratic party and among independents frustrated with the influence of Wall Street in politics.

According to a copy of the indictment obtained by Bleeping Computer, the 12 accused are part of Unit 26165 and Unit 74455 of the Russian government's Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU), the country's military intelligence service.

"Please tell me if i can help u anyhow.it would be great pleasure to me", Guccifer 2.0 wrote, according to the indictment.

In addition to contact with WikiLeaks, several people reached out to Guccifer 2.0 in August 2016 soliciting access to the stolen documents, the indictment says. "The person responded, "(p) retty standard".

Rosenstein said he briefed Trump about the indictment before Friday's announcement and that the timing was determined by "the facts, the evidence, and the law".

Special Counsel Robert Mueller's wide-net Russian Federation investigation has officially resulted in 191 criminal charges against 35 defendants, and that count may only rise.

Rosenstein told BBC that the defendants corresponded with several Americans during the conspiracy to manipulate the elections but there is no direct allegation that any U.S. citizen indulged in criminal activity.

Mueller's investigation has also secured other guilty pleas.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was quoted as saying that the 12 Russians accused of hacking the committee used spear phishing emails and malicious software in their purported cyber attacks.
