Disney CEO Bob Iger Reveals New Details About Upcoming Streaming Service

Disney's live-action Star Wars series could cost whopping $100M Disney's upcoming streaming service could contain a 10-episode, $100 million Star Wars show

With the Disney-branded entertainment service, Disney will have more control over its movies and TV shows from creation to distribution. Every MCU movie now hosted on Netflix will be leaving the site, and the next film in the franchise, next March's Captain Marvel, will be the first to head directly to Disney's site instead of Netflix.

Regarding the Disney streaming service, Iger offered it will feature content from Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and other Disney related content; Iger said the library will develop over time especially once the deal with Fox Studios officially goes through (said to be late spring / early summer 2019).

According to the earnings call, the new Disney streaming service will be cheaper than Netflix.

Disney is "on track" to launch its Disney-branded streaming service late next year, with "numerous original projects now in various stages of development and production", according to CEO Bog Iger.

Iger said he did not believe the launch of an OTT TV service would complicate Disney's relationship with its distribution partners and said traditional distributors were "very, very interested in distributing our D2C products" just as they increasingly distribute Netflix.

A recent report implied that Disney was in talks to reacquire the cable rights for the original trilogy and the prequels.

First round of United States tariffs on Chinese goods to hit $50B - USTR
July 10: TheUS releases an initial listof an additional $200 billion worth of Chinese goods that could be subject to a 10% tariff. China's surplus with the United States shrank marginally to $28.09 billion last month from a record $28.97 billion in June.

Disney said the loss at BAMTech, which was consolidated by Disney a year ago and which provides the technology for the ESPN+ streaming service launched in April, reflected higher content and marketing costs and ongoing investment in technology.

Net income attributable to Disney rose to $2.92 billion, or $1.95 per share, in the quarter, compared with $2.37 billion, or $1.51 per share, a year ago.

Total revenue rose 7% to $15.23bn, driven by box office successes as well as theme parks and resort visits, but missed analysts' $15.34bn forecast.

An upcoming Star Wars TV show might be quite expensive.

Disney shares have risen slightly more than 8 percent since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor's 500 index has risen nearly 7 percent.
