Oscars to Trim Some Awards From Telecast, Add a ‘Popular Film’ Category

The Oscars Will Be Adding A New Category To Honor ‘Popular’ Movies Oscars 2020 Airdate Announced and Changes Teased by AMPAS

They have also announced that a new category is being designed around achievement in popular film, and that they are planning a more globally accessible, three-hour telecast.

The 2018 awards show, which clocked in at nearly four hours, was the least-watched Oscars to date.

The Board of Governors, staff, Academy members, and various working groups spent the last several months discussing improvements to the show. The 2019 show will still run on Sunday, Feb. 24. Bailey and Hudson said eligibility requirements will be determined at a later date.

The legendarily lengthy Oscars telecast will also be shortened, which means certain awards will not be presented during the live broadcast - another major break with Academy Awards tradition. However, these winners will still be televised later in the broadcast, in the form of montage videos that will air later in the evening.

The changes follow an uneasy period for the Oscars, after the four-hour long 91st Academy Awards attracted only 26.5m viewers, a drop of 19% since the previous year and the first time in a decade ratings had dropped below 30m. The 2019 ceremony will still air on February 24, while the 2020 show will move to February 9.

Almost a decade after expanding its Best Picture category to include up to 10 nominees in an effort to feature a wider variety of films, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is making another big change that could mean more spotlight time for genre films and blockbusters. The Board of Governors took this charge seriously. They argue the change "will not affect awards eligibility dates or the voting process". The Academy has shifted dates over the years, usually from March in the 1940s and 1980s and April in the 1960s and 1970s before settling in February in the mid-2000s.

We are excited about these steps, and look forward to sharing more details with you.

- Damian Pietrzak (@Damiansport1)We need to see all categories and awards, please do not give anything in commercial breaks.

When it comes to the Academy Awards, there's always been a divide of sorts when it comes to the movies that end up being nominated and popular, blockbuster films.
