Russian Federation voiced support for Saudi Arabia in its worsening row with Canada on Wednesday, telling Ottawa it was unacceptable to lecture the kingdom on human rights. Earlier this week, Saudi Arabia froze new trade and investment with Canada and gave the Canadian ambassador 24 hours to leave the kingdom. The country's state airline announced it is suspending operations to Canada, and the Saudis government is withdrawing more than 15,000 Saudi students from Canadian schools.

So far this year, Canada has exported $1.4 billion in merchandise goods to Saudi Arabia and imported $2 billion, according to Statistics Canada data.

The kingdom has suspended educational exchanges with Canada and moved Saudi scholars to other countries. The kingdom said today that it's transferring all Saudi patients from Canadian hospitals to medical facilities outside the country.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry called Canada's criticism of the arrest "blatant interference in the kingdom's domestic affairs, against basic global norms and all worldwide protocols", and an "unacceptable affront" to its "laws and judicial process". Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland, whose tweet sparked the hostility, said that "Canada will continue to advocate for human rights and for the courageous women and men who push for these fundamental rights around the world" after Saudi's response.

The execution came during a deepening dispute between the two countries sparked by Canadian criticism of how Saudi Arabia is treating jailed activists. "Therefore, Canada must correct its actions towards the kingdom".

"I will say Canada is very comfortable with our position", she told reporters.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia put a man to death on a cross in the holy city of Mecca on Wednesday, while waging a public relations battle to call out alleged human rights violations in Canada.

The bank had received no instructions to sell assets as they do not have any exposure there, the source said.

"We have always said that the politicisation of human rights matters is unacceptable", Zakharova said.
