They were sentenced to prison in a case that has horrified the country.

The pair have only been identified by the pseudonyms Berrin T and Christian L in line with German privacy rules.

The 48-year-old mother will not appeal her 12-and-a-half-year prison sentence because she wanted to signal to her 10-year-old son that "things would be quiet now", her lawyer Matthias Wagner said.

The mother of the boy, Berrin T., 48, and her partner Christian L., 39, will serve twelve-and-a-half-year and twelve-year prison sentences respectively for selling Berrin's son on the area of the internet that can not be accessed by search engines.

News agency dpa reported that the Freiburg state court sentenced the woman on Tuesday to 12½ years in prison and her partner to 12 years. Some of the abuse was filmed.

The court found that the couple had sexually assaulted and raped the boy for years, and sold him on the so-called dark net to pedophiles between May 2015 and August 2017.

Six others are accused of being part of the paedophile ring in which the boy was abused.

Lais, 39, had a previous conviction for child abuse, raising questions why he was allowed to live in a home with a child present.

They also admitted they had sexually abused their son, who was nine at the time.

Video footage catalogued the horror of the boy's abuse, which included him being tied up and subjected to verbal humiliation.

The couple must now pay £38,000 in damages to their son and to a three-year-old girl, who they also sexually abused.

Officials took the boy away from his mother in March previous year following vague indications from police that he might be at risk, but a local court sent him back weeks later on condition that she not allow any contact between the child and her partner.

Local authorities in Germany have been accused of failing to protect the boy, who now lives with a foster family.
