The head of a suspected chemical weapons' research centre in Syria has been killed in a vehicle bombing, pro-government and opposition media report.

Aziz Asber, director of the Syrian Scientific Research Centre in Masyaf, a town close to the city of Hama, died in the blast, the pro-Syrian government newspaper al-Watan reported on Sunday.

The Abu Amara Brigades released a statement on their Telegram online channel that said they "planted explosive devices" which detonated and killed Asber.

The group is an affiliate of Islamist group Tahrir al-Sham, which is itself linked with al-Qaeda.

A senior Syrian scientist involved in the Assad regime's chemical weapons programme has been assassinated in central Syria, reports claimed on Saturday night.

In April, the U.S., Britain and France carried out joint airstrikes against the center's Damascus facilities in response to an alleged chemical weapons attack by government forces near the capital.

The Masyaf facility has previously been hit by what the Syrian government said were Israeli strikes in July and past year in September. Israel has been carrying out strikes inside Syria to prevent advanced weapons transfers to the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, an ally of the Syrian government. The center has been targeted in two air attacks that have been attributed to Israel, including one in April that killed several Iranians.

An Israeli government official declined to comment on reports of Asber's death when asked by Reuters. At least 400,000 people have been killed and more than 11 million people displaced in the violence.
