Now, the bots have shown that they are good enough to defeat gamers that have been playing Dota 2 for years.
After OpenAI took down members of the audience easily during a warmup round, the bot network started and finished the first of the two matches strongly, stopping its human opponents from destroying any of its defensive towers. Using a massively scaled-up version of "Proximal Policy Optimization", which is a training system designed for OpenAI's successful 1v1 Dota 2 bot. OpenAI Five plays the game for a whopping 180 years every single day thanks to 256 GPUs and 128,000 CPU cores in the Google Compute Cloud. OpenAI challenged five of the world's best pro Dota 2 players, and the AI won handily. Heroes in Dota 2 often interact in complex ways. In a press release following the tournament, OpenAI said that they saw the victory as a "step towards advanced AI systems which can handle the complexity and uncertainty of the real world". The bots are powered by five artificial neural networks trained to play the game from scratch using reinforcement learning, an iterative process that involves observation, action and feedback.
After losing the first three games of Go to Google's AlphaGo, Lee Sedol, a professional player ranked second in worldwide titles, deployed a highly unusual strategy to win the fourth game, inspired in part by the idiosyncratic algorithmic playing style of the AI that he had observed during the previous three games. The match even opened with a declariton from OpenAI, "We estimate the probability of winning to be above 95%". In one week of implementation, we crafted a fake frame for each of the 11 million possible team matchups and wrote a tree search to find OpenAI Five's optimal draft. Despite the wealth of experience on the team, the humans could do little against the never-ending onslaught and precision of OpenAI, and they quickly lost in humiliating fashion.
For those who don't know, OpenAI is a non-profit organization founded by Elon Musk.
