The powerful natural disaster sent thousands of Lombok residents and tourists scrambling outdoors, where many spent the night because strong aftershocks including one of 5.3-magnitude continued to rattle the island.

More than one thousand tourists were being evacuated from Indonesia's tiny Gili islands on Monday after a powerful quake struck neighbouring Lombok, killing 91 people and injuring hundreds.

Power and communications were severed in some areas, with landslides and a collapsed bridge blocking access to areas around the epicentre in the north. Thousands of homes and buildings were damaged and those displaced camped wherever they could - in sports fields and on roadsides, cobbling together ramshackle shelters and building campfires for warmth.

The island was already reeling from a magnitude 6.4 quake on July 29, which killed 16 people.

Two days after the quake, rescuers were still struggling to reach all the affected areas and authorities expected the death toll to rise.

Another Briton on Gili Trawangan, James Kelsall, told the Press Association the subsequent tsunami warning was the most terrifying part.

Australia's home affairs minister has tweeted that he and his delegation have been safely evacuated in darkness from a Lombok hotel where they have been staying during a regional security conference. "I could not stand up", said Gino Poggiali, a 43-year-old Frenchman, who was with his wife and two children at the airport. Here I am on vacation, enjoying life in Bali and suddenly this thing happened.it's SO close I'm genuinely terrified.it just went through my head how lucky and powerless I am. "Lots of cracks, fallen doors", he wrote on Facebook.

Lombok is a popular tourist destination east of Bali.

His wife Maude, 44, said the family was on Bali for the first quake and Lombok for the second. "The lamp was shaking, and people were shouting 'Get out.' I ran out into the dark because the power cut off". "People filled the streets", said Michelle Lindsay, an Australian tourist.

After a 6.1 quake on July 28 that killed many on the Indonesian Tourist Island of Lombok a 7.1-magnitude natural disaster on Sunday night made this situation so much worse. Most of the deaths were caused by collapsing houses. There have been many aftershocks, although they are not strong so far.

"We are just thankful to God and also to the hotel staff who really helped us".

Officials blamed the destroyed houses on the lack of firm structure.

Carlos Romartinez, a 24-year-old Spaniard who was also waiting for a flight out of Lombok, said he had made a decision to head instead to the island of Flores to the east.

"As always, we recommend taking out travel insurance at the time of booking your trip, to ensure you are covered for instances such as this", White says.
