It was there, as the students sat waiting to resume their journey home on Thursday, that a Saudi-led coalition airstrike hit their school bus.

The buses were targeted as they were passing through Dahyan market in the rebel-held province of Saada, according to the Houthi-run Al-Masirah TV.

A military coalition led by Saudi Arabia has been carrying out airstrikes since 2015 against Houthi positions - causing thousands of civilian deaths in the process, according to war monitors - in an attempt to restore the internationally-recognized government of President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi.

Footage from the Houthi media office showed a boy wearing a blue backpack with a UNICEF logo being carried into a hospital emergency room with blood pouring down his face and over his traditional Yemeni thawb, an ankle-length garment.

Qassemi further said the countries involved in acts of aggression against Yemeni people resort to such statements in an attempt to cover up their criminal acts and divert world public opinion from the realities on the ground in the war-ravaged country.

The missile was sacked from Amran province in northern Yemen on Wednesday night, the coalition said in a statement published by the Saudi Press Agency.

According to the United Nations human rights office, more than 16,000 civilians have been killed or injured since the war began, the vast majority by airstrikes.

Worldwide aid agencies denounced the attack and the loss of civilian lives.

Air strikes by the Saudi-led coalition have killed hundreds of civilians at hospitals, schools and markets.

"The targeting that happened today in Saada province was legal military action to target elements that planned and executed the targeting of civilians in the city of Jizan last night, killing and wounding civilians", the Saudi Press Agency cited al-Maliki as saying.

"This is yet another example of the blatant violations of global humanitarian law that we have seen in Yemen over the past three years-from indiscriminate and disproportionate attacks on civilians, denial of access to humanitarian aid and the use of starvation as a weapon of war-it's the people of Yemen, not the warring parties, who are paying the ultimate price".

The International Committee of the Red Cross said on Twitter that an ICRC supported hospital received dozens of dead and wounded following the attack that hit a bus with children.

Fragments from a missile launched at the Jizan Industrial City in southern Saudi Arabia late on Wednesday killed one Yemeni civilian and wounded 11, Saudi state media said earlier on Thursday.

The Houthis have in recent months ramped up missile attacks against Saudi Arabia, which Riyadh usually says it intercepts.

The United States is helping the coalition, the only party in the conflict to use war planes, with refueling, intelligence, and billions in weapons sales.

"It is beyond cruel; innocent children's lives have been lost".

"The human cost of the war in Yemen is so high".
