At least 12 other civilians were also wounded.

The Israeli military declined to comment on the official's remarks. The UN's Mideast envoy appealed for calm.

The flare-up came after officials on both sides had talked about potential progress in an effort by the United Nations and Egypt to broker a truce to end months of violence and alleviate deepening humanitarian and economic hardship in the Gaza Strip.

Following May's rocket attacks, Israel and Gaza reached an uneasy cease-fire mediated by Egypt, though rocket launches and airstrike retaliation has continued.

Gaza has been controlled by Hamas for more than a decade, during which time it has fought three wars against Israel, most recently in 2014. Despite the animosity, the enemies appear to be working through Egyptian mediators to avoid another war.

Later, Palestinians fired about 70 rockets across the border, and Israeli aircraft struck at least a dozen militant targets.

The rockets and arson attacks came a day after Hamas announced they would seek revenge for the Israeli military reportedly killing two Hamas snipers. Hamas said two of its fighters were killed after taking part in a gunfire parade inside a militant camp.

The escalation comes after the Hamas leadership convened for a rare meeting in Gaza on Friday.

However, several houses and factories were damaged in Israeli communities by the impact of the rockets.

Nickolay Mladenov, the UN's special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, said on Wednesday he was "deeply alarmed by the recent escalation of violence between Gaza and Israel, and particularly by today's mutiple rockets fired towards communities in southern Israel". The ministry said the militant and the civilians were killed in separate incidents.

The mother and daughter died immediately and the father is in critical condition, Kamal said.

Earlier this week two of its militants were killed after Israel shelled a Hamas border post in northern Gaza. Two pregnant women went into premature labor as a result of the rockets and eight other Israelis were taken to the hospital to be treated for anxiety attacks.

A video has been circulating on social media that captures the terror that Israelis endure when Hamas launches rockets at them.

Some source reported that were spotted IDF's tank and heave armored vehicles that heading toward Gaza border as serious escalations occur tonight.

Hamas military wing, Ezzeddin al-Qassam Brigades, identified the victims of Tuesday's Israeli strike as Ahmed Murjan and Abdel-Hafez al-Silawi.

Neither the United Nations nor Egypt has publicly discussed its plans for a renewed Gaza cease-fire, but they said it would bring economic relief to Gaza's 2 million residents experiencing shortages under crippling blockades.

Clashes along the Gaza border since the end of March have seen at least 160 Palestinians killed in Israeli firing.

The statistics showed that 155 Palestinians were shot and killed, while 17,259 suffered from various injuries, including tear-gas suffocation.
