Sky Sports News broke that news about United's interest in Godin, but now Sky journalist Kaveh Solhekol has tweeted out stating that Atletico rejected the approach - seemingly nearly instantly.

Sky Sports News understands that United have approached Atletico Madrid with a view to signing the Uruguay defender, as Jose Mourinho is desperate to strengthen at the back before the transfer window closes.

But Mourinho's hopes were dashed after he was was told the Uruguayan worldwide has agreed a new deal with Atletico.

United were hopeful that they could have persuaded Godin to sign and join his new teammates in time for the Red Devils' Premier League season opener against Leicester on Friday night but they will have to return to the drawing board now.

A contract offer worth €9m-a-year was tabled to Godin's management to tempt him away, but the defender turned it down.

That quick turnaround has infuriated the Portuguese manager who now believes that the agent's agenda was always to get his 32-year-old client an improved contract.

Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire, Yerry Mina, Jerome Boateng and Kurt Zouma have all been linked with a move to Old Trafford in the last couple of weeks, only for United to reach deadline day without signing any of them.

When asked about potential transfers at Thursday morning's press conference, Mourinho said he was "not confident" of bringing anyone in before the 5pm deadline.
