The military said an Israeli tank shelled the Hamas post after troops came under fire.

"In response, an IDF (Israel Defence Forces) tank targeted the post from which the shots were fired", the statement read, adding that the post belongs to Hamas, an Islamist Palestinian group that runs Gaza.

The Israeli strike reportedly hit a graduation ceremony of al-Qassam at a Hamas military base with senior Hamas figures in attendance.

The incident comes as the United Nations and Egypt continue to try to broker a deal for a lasting ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which dominates Gaza. One Israeli soldier was killed by a Gaza sniper during this period.

The military released footage that it said was of the incident.

Israel says Hamas, which rules Gaza, is using the protests as cover to carry out cross-border attacks.

Sources confirmed that Murjan and al-Silawi were members of the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Hamas movement.

On Monday, Israel responded to the launching of flaming balloons from Gaza into southern Israel by launching an airstrike, injuring two Gazans.

The first half of 2018 has been deadly for Palestinian children, with at least 35 children killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank and besieged Gaza Strip, according to Defense for Children International - Palestine (DCIP).

The tension in Gaza has been high since the Palestinians launched massive anti-Israel rallies in March, known as "the Great March of Return", which demanded the lift of the blockade Israel has imposed on Gaza since 2007.
