A strong aftershock struck Indonesia's Lombok on Thursday, causing panic among evacuees sheltering after a devastating quake killed more than 160 on the holiday island four days earlier.

Lombok was hit by three big quakes in little more than a week.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency said that at least 131 people were killed in Sunday's quake, but other agencies say the death toll has risen to more than 300.

Thousands have been left homeless and in desperate need of clean water, food, medicine and shelter in Lombok.

The latest aftershock, which had a magnitude of 5.9, according to the US Geological Survey, caused fresh panic and damage on the island. The Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics said that yesterday's aftershock, one of the more than 300 registered by that entity, was the strongest one, although it did not have to activate the tsunami warning. After the 6.9 magnitude natural disaster in Lombok, Facebook users wrote "I hope people will survive".

Both seismic events struck in Lombok's north, a more residential and less developed part of the island than the resort-filled south.

Because of the magnitude of the natural disaster, a number of telecommunication infrastructure in Lombok damaged, but the damage did not affect the network and range of Net1 Indonesia 4G LTE.

The number of confirmed deaths from Sunday's horror quake has risen to 259.

Thousands of tourists have also left Lombok since Sunday.

Evacuees in some encampments say they are running out of food, while others are suffering psychological trauma after the powerful quake.

Some villages were "completely collapsed", said a Red Cross official in Lombok, Christopher Rassi. He also said that search and rescue operations were ongoing but things weren't as smooth and they would like as the aftershocks added to the woes.

"People are always saying they need water and tarps", he said.

Widodo visited the island after a 6.4 magnitude quake on July 29 killed 17 people and injured dozens more.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because of its location on the "Ring of Fire", an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin. An estimated 230,000 people died after a magnitude 9.1 natural disaster triggered a tsunami off the coast of Sumatra in December 2004.
