Counterprotesters return to UVA campus for rally

Washington is bracing for a white nationalist rally that law enforcement agencies will try to prevent from descending into a melee like the one in Charlottesville, Virginia, that cast a shadow over Donald Trump's presidency a year ago.

"One year ago in Charlottesville, we witnessed an ugly display of hatred, racism, bigotry & violence", Ms. Trump wrote.

He called for the nation to "come together" after a week in which he stoked racial divisions with attacks on black athletes and other minorities.

In a tweet over the weekend, Trump said he condemned "all types of racism and acts of violence". As The Post reported, "Trump's tweet Saturday, his first public mention of the anniversary, did not label the event as a white supremacist rally or specify that it was a white rallygoer who rammed his auto into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing one".

On Saturday, anti-fascist marchers in Charlottesville held peaceful demonstrations against white supremacy as many people laid flowers on a makeshift memorial to Heather Heyer, who was killed in last year's violence while protesting the extreme right.

The president infamously blamed protesters "on many sides" for the conflict instead of specifically criticizing the racist sentiment that spurred the tragedy.

Two days later, after a firestorm of criticism, the president said: "Racism is evil and those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and other hate groups".

Two state police personnel - Lt. H. Jay Cullen and Trooper-Pilot Berke M.M. Bates - died in a helicopter crash responding to the scene.

Before past year, when white supremacists staged violent clashes in Charlottesville, Virginia, a wealthy university town, many white Americans did not take the threat of neo-Nazi groups seriously.

"Last year was a whole different story".

Hundreds of students and activists took to the streets on Saturday evening, as a rally planned for the University of Virginia campus turned into a march through the city. In an interview later Friday on "Anderson Cooper 360", Bro said she thinks it's time to "take the focus off Heather, as Heather would want us to do".

"And, to me, that's where change has to happen", she said. "You let it go and you're OK until the next one comes", she said. The city closed downtown streets and public parks and restricted access to a downtown "security area", where visitors were prohibited from wearing masks or carrying certain items, including skateboards, catapults, glass bottles, bats and knives.

Charlottesville is some 187 kilometers from Washington, but officials and opponents of the white nationalist rally fear some protesters may travel to Washington or parts of nearby Northern Virginia. Trump said then the group included "fine people".

Democrat Mark Warner, a U.S. senator from Virginia, insisted Trump cleared the way for white nationalists to spread "hate and bigotry".
