A California jury today ordered the maker of the popular weed killer Roundup to pay $289 million in damages to a schools groundskeeper who alleges Roundup caused his cancer. Monsanto, a unit of Bayer AG following a US$62.5 billion acquisition by the German conglomerate, faces more than 5,000 similar lawsuits across the United States.
A spokesman for Monsanto, the company behind Roundup, said the agribusiness will appeal the ruling.
Former school groundskeeper Dewayne Johnson has been awarded almost $290 million after a jury at the Superior Court of California in San Francisco determined that "Roundup" played a "substantial factor" in his deteriorating health.
