Sir Paul McCartney, 76, said: "Let's all take a moment to give thanks for the lovely life of Aretha Franklin, the queen of our souls, who inspired us all for many, many years". Here, The Los Angeles Times looks back at her life, her music and her impact.

Tributes to the "Queen of Soul" have flowed in from entertainment figures.

Davis freshened Franklin's sound while retaining her deep gospel roots, and the result was a late-career run of hits.

Speaking to RT, King reminisced about the "revolutionary" singer, who "knew who she was, knew what she wanted, and got what she wanted".

Franklin died at 9:50 a.m.at her home in Detroit, surrounded by family and friends, according to a statement on behalf of Franklin's family from her longtime publicist Gwendolyn Quinn, reported CNN.

But when she switched to Atlantic Records in the mid-1960s, producer Jerry Wexler knew just what to do with Franklin, putting her powerful voice in a setting that combined gospel, soul and rock and made her a superstar by letting "the lady wail".

"Aretha's legacy should be excellence in music", Mitchell said.

Franklin's family described her as "the matriarch and rock of our family", saying that her death was "one of the darkest moments of our lives". The photo is of Patti LaBelle from her 2014 performance of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" for President Barack Obama.

Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Peter Strzok fired over texts
Francis Rooney, R-Fla., wished for a "purge" of Justice Department officials who don't like President Donald Trump. Trump has repeatedly been critical of Mueller and Strzok on Twitter in attempts to discredit the investigation.

With a clip from the memorable performance, The Independent notes Franklin hits the song's deceptively hard high notes easily. "We sincerely apologize to Aretha Franklin's family and friends", Jessica Santostefano, Vice President, Media Desk at Fox News explained. (One of her final studio albums, as it turned out.) The venue for our sitdown was Le Cirque, in midtown Manhattan, a stately, upscale French eatery, one of the Big Apple's finest.

Robert Smith Jr., the senior pastor at New Bethel Baptist, took the position in 1982 after C.L. Franklin's retirement three years prior.

Sometimes Franklin spoke, rather than sang, about her beliefs.

"It is with deep and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Aretha Louise Franklin, the Queen of Soul", the statement said.

Aretha Franklin's "Respect" wasn't just the single that shot the young performer to superstardom in 1967, it was also an anthem for a generation of women and the civil-rights activists.

But Reverend Franklin had also been arrested for drug possession and, under unexplained circumstances, his wife left him and their five children when Aretha was six. The songstress was married twice, first to Theodore "Ted" White in 1961, but the marriage was reportedly abusive and they divorced by 1969.

Her last public performance was at Elton John's AIDS Foundation gala in NY last November.

In February 2017, Franklin told Detroit news station WDIV Local 4 that she would be retiring from touring after the release of her colloboration album with Stevie Wonder. Two years later, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and became the second woman ever to be inducted into the U.K. Music Hall of Fame.
