Cancer Linked Weed Killer Found in Kids’ Cereals

New study finds glyphosate in kids' cereals and snack bars Big US retailers stick by Roundup after cancer verdict

Significant levels of the weedkilling chemical glyphosate have been found in an array of popular breakfast cereals, oats and snack bars marketed to USA children, a new study has found.

Nearly three-quarters of food samples tested showed higher glyphosate levels than what the group's scientists believe to be "protective of children's health", the report indicates. More than two thirds of them had glyphosate levels higher than those considered acceptable by EWG scientists. "The majority of samples of conventional oat products from EWG's study exceeded 160ppb, meaning that a single serving of those products would exceed EWG's health benchmark".

Last week, a California jury ordered Monsanto to pay $289 million in damages to a man with terminal cancer.

EWG tested more than a dozen brands of oat-based foods to give Americans information about dietary exposures that government regulators are keeping secret.

A report by Environmental Working Group (EWG) has stated that several of America's popular breakfast food come with a "hefty dose of the weed-killing poison" as quoted by a report in CNN.

The lawsuit opens the floodgates for more litigation against Monsanto - which denies that the weed killer causes cancer and plans to appeal the verdict - and its use of the chemical glyphosate in Roundup.

But that is no longer the case, which is why the state is urging people to stay up-to-date on the recommended vaccines. Measles was eliminated in the United States in 2000, meaning the disease was no longer regularly found in the country.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has also determined that glyphosate is "not likely to be carcinogenic to humans". The unsafe levels were found mostly in grain products (3.9 per cent).

The Environmental Protection Agency has said for years that there's not much evidence that the pesticide can cause cancer in people.

In a statement to FOX Business regarding the report, a General Mills' spokesperson says, "Our products are safe and without questions they meet regulatory safety levels".

Quaker Oats released a statement, "We proudly stand by the safety and quality of our Quaker products". Quaker does not add glyphosate during any part of the milling process.

"When you're dealing with something like that, a 1-in-a-million increased risk of cancer, I would say that isn't a significant level to be particularly concerned about", Michael Davoren, who studies molecular toxicology at UCLA and was not involved in the report, told WebMD.

The Environmental Working Group is disappointed that General Mills and the Quaker Oats Company have brushed aside consumer health concerns raised by new research that found the cancer-causing weed killerglyphosate in Quaker Old Fashioned Oats, Quaker Dinosaur Egg Instant Oatmeal and Cheerios. The nonprofit wants the EPA to make its standard more stringent: "Our general stance is pesticides and herbicides really don't belong in children's food", says Alexis Temkin, a toxicologist at EWG. While organic foods should by definition be free of chemicals like glyphosate, these chemicals can often drift onto these crops from nearby fields of conventionally-grown crops, or at factories that handle both kinds of crop. "The EPA has researched this issue and has set rules that we follow". And if you're looking for a healthy granola bar that doesn't contain glyphosate, according to EWG, opt for the Cascadian Farm Organic Harvest Berry.
