Both Missouri and IL are among the 21 states that the CDC is monitoring for a measles outbreak.

The CDC is reporting over 100 people were reported to have measles in 21 states, including CT.

The CDC says the majority of people who got measles were not vaccinated.

There were 118 reported measles cases in all of 2017 and only 86 the year before that.

A year ago saw 118 cases - in a 12-month period.

Doctors said the best way to stay healthy is taking preventative measures like vaccinations, saying that measles is so contagious that all cases, whether it's 20 or 200, are watched closely.

But that is no longer the case, which is why the state is urging people to stay up-to-date on the recommended vaccines. Symptoms usually show up 10 to 14 days after a person is exposed and last for seven to 10 days.

Measles is an airborne virus which can be spread through coughing and sneezing.

Measles was eliminated in the United States in 2000, meaning the disease was no longer regularly found in the country. Within about 5 days, it fades in the order it appeared. These patients also may have similar symptoms to those who are suffering from measles: fevers, a cough, and a variable rash that can take on many different appearances. Vaccination is now the only effective way to prevent measles. Numerous cases in the U.S.in 2014 were associated with cases brought in from the Philippines, which experienced a large measles outbreak. "MMR vaccine provides long-lasting protection against all strains of measles", the CDC official said. Two doses are about 97% effective.
