John McCain passed away at the age of 81 on August 25, just one day after announcing that he wouldn't continue seeking medical treatment for the "aggressive" form of cancer he was battling.

United States senator John McCain, a celebrated war hero known for reaching across the aisle in an increasingly divided America, died Saturday following a battle with brain cancer.

"In an era filled with cynicism about national unity and public service, John McCain's life shone as a bright example. He passed the way he lived, on his own terms, surrounded by the people he loved, in the the place he loved best".

Meghan McCain, a co-host of "The View", was fiercely loyal to her father.

President Trump took to Twitter to remember McCain saying his "deepest sympathies and respect" go out to family of John McCain after the senator's death.

Cindy McCain wrote on Twitter, "My heart is broken".

Trump did, however, express support for the senator, a harsh critic of Trump, when his diagnosis was first announced past year.

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, who served for years in the Senate with McCain said in a statement that "no one is more worthy of the word "hero" than John McCain".

A White House official said Trump also called McCain following word of the senator's diagnosis.

"Few of us have been tested the way John once was, or required to show the kind of courage that he did", the Obamas write. "And for that, we are all in his debt".

He first ran for president in 2000, but was defeated in the Republican primary by then-fellow candidate George W. Bush. "Some voices are so vibrant, it's hard to think of them stilled". He was a public servant in the finest traditions of our country. "And I've lost one of my dearest friends and mentor".

Many American allies would have described him as their greatest friend in the US Congress.

Earlier this summer, Mr McCain issued a blistering statement criticising Mr Trump's meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin.

It is often seen as a gesture reserved for the country's "most eminent citizens". During his final years in the Senate, McCain was perhaps the loudest advocate for U.S. military involvement in Iraq, Syria, Libya and more. His wife and other family members were with him. "I will need some time to absorb this, but I want Cindy --and the entire McCain family -- to know they are in my prayers". "May their memories of this great man sustain them".

"Senator John McCain was a man of honor, bravery and objective".

Senator McCain quickly pivoted, noting the US-Australia alliance rests on more than nostalgia for our shared sacrifice, but animated by our hopes for the future, by the common belief that "our destinies are inseparable from the character of the broader world order". "He will be missed". In his statement, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said McCain's death represented a "sad day for the Senate and for our nation". In October 2017, McCain blistered Trump's "America first" foreign policy approach as a "half-baked, spurious nationalism cooked up by people who would rather find scapegoats than solve problems".

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer will introduce a resolution to rename the Senate's Russell office building after the late Sen. "But he also had a great concern for and love of the environment", said Sen.
