SandersSanders congratulates Disney World union workers on minimum wage victory Tentative deal reached to give Disney World workers an hour Sanders praises Dem move to limit role of superdelegates in picking nominee MORE (I) congratulated progressive candidate Andrew Gillum (D) on his upset win in Florida in Tuesday night's gubernatorial primary.

"Tonight as the mayor of Florida's capital city, I humbly accept the Democratic nomination", Gillum said to loud cheers from watch-party attendees as they chanted "Bring it home!"

With the majority of precincts reporting in Florida by 9:30 p.m., Gillum and his progressive campaign had pulled ahead of former Congresswoman Gwen Graham by a margin of 34 percent of the vote to Graham's 31 percent, according to the state Division of Elections.

Gillum spent only $6.5 million on a primary where billionaire Jeff Greene spent $38 million and millionaire former Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine spent about $29 million of his fortune. Check back here for updates.

His closest rival and the Florida establishment candidate is state Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), who joined him on the campaign trail. His grassroots campaign mirrors that of Ocasio-Cortez, whose takedown of New York City goliath Rep. Joe Crowley sent shockwaves through the Democratic Party earlier this year.

"No one person can take on the economic and political elites on their own", Sanders said in a statement after the race was called.

Gillum will face off against Republican Ron DeSantis in the November 6 general election. DeSantis was one of several Republicans running in contests in Florida and Arizona who hoped that cozying up to the president would be rewarded by voters.

"All indications that we are going to have an usually high turnout at least in recent years", said Michael McDonald, a political scientist at the University of Florida.

Putnam had always been considered the favorite to win the GOP primary with state party backing and big donations from the biggest corporate entities in the state, including supermarket chain Publix, U.S. Sugar, Florida Power & Light and Disney.

On 'The Ingraham Angle, ' Republican Florida gubernatorial candidate says his campaign had unstoppable momentum.

Trump surprised Florida Republicans with his endorsement of DeSantis, and frequently tweeted about the lawmaker, one of his staunchest supporters in Washington. Gillum had consistently trailed in the few polls on the race, but scored a boost with the endorsement of Sen.

"This is our moment", Gillum asserted Tuesday night.
