The New Hampshire state Department of Health and Human Services ( NH DHHS) is ordering the Sands Resort in Hampton, NH to immediately remediate Legionella bacteria found on its premises.

State officials say one person has died from Legionnaires' Disease as an outbreak in Hampton continues to grow. Common sources for this disease include aerosol droplet inhalation from showers, hot tubs, cooling towers, faucets, as well as decorative fountains.

Tenants say they are frustrated with the city's Department of Health for not telling them sooner about two cases of Legionnaires' disease in their building.

One of those 12 Hampton victims, an elderly adult, died due to complications related to the disease.

This is a serious situation since there are no vaccines that can prevent Legionnaires' disease, which is bacterial pneumonia, caused by the Legionella bacteria.

The Centers for Disease Control is assisting state health officials in confirming the source of the outbreak. Most people get better with early treatment, although they may need to be hospitalized.

Of those Hampton cases, the majority of people stayed or resided in the Ashworth Avenue area, although it is possible they may have received other exposures.

Martin said upon interviewing the Nashua patients, health officials determined the cases were not connected to the Hampton outbreak.

The state announced the Legionnaires' Disease "cluster" last weekend with four initial cases. The Public Health Service of Canada points out it can not be transmitted between people.

Legionnaires' disease symptoms are very similar to other types of pneumonia and can include a cough, shortness of breath, fever, muscle aches, and headaches.
