"The more former President Obama speaks about the "good ol years" of his presidency, the more likely President Trump is to get re-elected", senator Lindsey Graham tweeted.

Mr Obama also poked fun on the issue the current president frequently heralds as one of his greatest achievements - the strong economy.

In his first major political speech since leaving the White House, Obama made a lengthy appeal to voters across the U.S. to restore "a healthy democracy", and denounced the tactics employed by Trump and Republicans in Washington as an unprecedented threat to the country's future.

Obama's office announced his first round of endorsements earlier this year and the official said his second round will be released in coming weeks.

"He's just capitalizing on resentments that politicians have been fanning for years", the former president added. After a particularly brutal loss in the 2010 midterms - 63 House seats and six Senate seats - Obama said the party had received a "shellacking". "All we need are decent, honest, hard-working people who are accountable and who have America's best interests at heart".

There was no immediate reaction from Trump, who, in remarks to a crowd in North Dakota, took Obama's speech Friday in stride.

Mr Obama, reacting to the article, said "that's not how our democracy is supposed to work".

President Donald Trump this week criticized the attorney general for prosecuting two Republican congressmen, saying it will hurt the party in the November elections. "I found he's very good, very good for sleeping".

"We're supposed to stand up to discrimination, and we're sure as heck supposed to stand up clearly and unequivocally to Nazi sympathizers", he said.

He blasted the "politics of fear" and said "the only way we reverse anger and division is when citizens step up to say 'we're going to do things differently'".

"By the way, that claim that everything will turn out OK because there are people inside the White House who secretly aren't following the president's orders?"

The rally, Obama's first appearance on behalf of specific candidates, comes a day after the former president spoke at University of IL at Urbana-Champlain.

The event, organized by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, was an attempt to boost seven Democrats running in districts Hillary Clinton won in 2016 but which are represented by the Republicans in the House.

Obama told students they were coming of age during a divisive period in United States history in which the powerful seek to divide to maintain the status quo.

Obama will head to Cleveland on September 13 to campaign for Ohio Democratic gubernatorial nominee Richard Cordray. In one of the speech's more timely soundbites, Obama blasted his successor's fierce and frequent attacks on the press. "You can not sit back and wait for a savior", Obama remarked. Accounts said Trump's aides don't trust him and were trying to curb some of his inclinations - including stealing papers off his desk.

Responding to Obama's address, Trump said he had fallen asleep listening to it.
