But the White House did not immediately confirm the cancellation, saying it was still finalizing plans for Trump's November trip to Europe.

There were plans for Trump to spend one day in the capital before travelling to Doonbeg in County Clare where he owns a golf course. Earlier this year Mr Varadkar said his USA counterpart was open to finding a solution but thus far none has been forthcoming, adding to the worries of the Irish community in the U.S. in the current climate.

But White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders later told reporters that no final decision had been made.

A spokesman for the Irish Government said: "I can confirm that the proposed visit of the United States president is postponed".

The White House announced on August 31 that Mr Trump would travel to Paris for a commemoration of the centenary of the Armistice which ended the fighting in the First World War.

"The president will travel to Paris in November as previously announced".

Meanwhile, Russian media reported Tuesday that Trump may meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the same European trip that had included the planned Ireland visit.

Donald Trump's plan to visit Ireland for the first time as USA president this November has been canceled for scheduling reasons, the Irish government announced on Tuesday. "Irish values", Green Party leader Eamon Ryan said.

It would be a "massive relief to the government", the paper added. However, the Taoiseach had issued an invitation to Donald Trump, when he attended the traditional Irish ceremonies in the White House, on St. Patrick's Day last.

As a cabinet minister, Mr Varadkar had opposed extending an invitation to Mr Trump before changing his mind when he became Prime Minister.

His office later said it was still possible Mr Trump will take up Mr Varadkar's invitation at a future date, but confirmed November's trip will not be happening.

Brendan Howlin, leader of the Labour Party in the Republic, said Mr Trump was "no friend of democracy or human rights".

Last week, Mr Varadkar said the news that Mr Trump was to visit Ireland "came a little bit out of the blue".
