CBS reporter reveals the text that allegedly got Jeff Fager fired

'60 Minutes' executive producer Jeff Fager out at CBS CBS says '60 Minutes' exec Jeff Fager out for violating company policy

CBS correspondent Jericka Duncan spoke out Wednesday night about a text message exchange she had with "60 Minutes" executive producer Jeff Fager over the weekend that pushed Fager out of the company.

'Bill Owens will manage the 60 Minutes team as Ingrid Ciprian-Matthews and I begin the search for a new executive producer of the program'.

Fager's departure comes just days after CBS chairman and CEO Leslie Moonves resigned following allegations of sexual assault and harassment. But Moonves wasn't the only CBS honcho named in the second report, and the spotlight was placed firmly on Fager once Moonves was shown the door.

Rhodes said Fager violated company policy but did not specify the policy.

Then, in his own statement Fager said that instead, CBS "terminated my contract early because I sent a text message to one of our own CBS reporters demanding that she be fair in covering the story".

Fager said he would not have thought that one note would have resulted in a dismissal after 36 years at the network, "but it did".

At the end of Duncan's report, anchor Jeff Glor said to her, "That message was unacceptable".

This is what he replied with, per Duncan: "If you repeat these false accusations without any of your own reporting to back them up, you will be responsible for harming me". "Be careful. There are people who lost their jobs trying to harm me and if you pass on these damaging claims without your own reporting to back them up that will become a serious problem". He was known as a hands-on executive producer, famous for meticulous involvement in screenings of prospective "60 Minutes" segments - in the tradition laid out by his predecessor. He also introduced "CBS This Morning" in January 2012.

When Farrow's story came out in July, Fager said Farrow's sources - a "few people", he claimed - had an "axe to grind". "60 Minutes" is, as Rhodes notes in his memo, "the most significant news broadcast on television", having debuted in 1968 and served as the investigative home for such television inquisitors as Mike Wallace, Morley Safer, Ed Bradley and Lesley Stahl.

'Jeff Fager is leaving the company effective immediately, ' read a memo sent to CBS staff on Wednesday afternoon.

Nineteen current and former CBS employees have accused Fager of inappropriate touching and allowing harassment to occur at the network, according to The New Yorker.

In a new story on Sunday, Farrow cited a former intern who said that Fager once groped her at an office function and described the culture as "sexist" and a "boy's club".
