North Atlantic Treaty Organisation has derided the provocative exercise, lasting for five days between September 11-15, as "exercising large-scale conflict" as hostility between Russian Federation and the West continues to esculate.

The exercise simulated a "massive missile attack" by an "unnamed enemy", another military official Sergei Tikhonov said.

He said that an increasingly unpredictable geopolitical climate made partnership between Russian Federation and China particularly important.

Mr Shoigu said Vostok-2018 will be "unprecedented in scale, both in terms of area of operations and numbers of military command structure, troops and forces involved", adding that it will also be "the largest preparatory action for the armed forces since Zapad-81".

"We have a trusting relationship [with China] in the spheres of politics, security, and defense", Putin said at the start of his meeting with Xi. President Vladimir Putin is expected to attend Vostok-2018 after hosting an economic forum in Russia's far eastern city Vladivostok where his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping is one of the star guests.

Russian Federation showcased its most sophisticated air defence system on Wednesday, using it to repel a mock attack from the sky as part of what it describes as its largest-ever military drills.

From China's perspective, the emerging military alliance with Russian Federation sends a strong signal to the USA and its ally Japan as Beijing moves to defend its interests in the South China Sea, which China claims virtually in its entirety, as well as Taiwan and the Senkaku and Diaoyu islands controlled by Japan but claimed by Beijing.

"The scale and the scenario of those drills are in line with the current military-political situation", said Ivashov, the retired Russian general.

Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov argued the exercises were "justified" in "the current worldwide situation" given "aggressive and unfriendly" attitudes towards Russian Federation.

Russian Federation kicked off the biggest war games in its history yesterday, mobilising 300,000 troops joined by more than 3,000 Chinese soldiers in a show of military might meant to counter what it called the "aggressive and unfriendly" attitudes towards it.

The People's Liberation Army, China's military, was "still in the process of acquiring combined arms training and expertise as it transformed into an informationised and modern fighting force", he said.

The exercises involve Chinese and Mongolian armies and will continue until September 17.

Taking part in the drills are around 300,000 soldiers, 36,000 military vehicles, 80 ships and 1,000 aircraft, helicopters and drones.

Relations between Russian Federation and the West declined sharply in 2014 with Moscow's annexation of Crimea and the subsequent conflict in eastern Ukraine.

Russia's defence ministry hailed the drills as successful.

"Russia has very strong real combat abilities and the participation of the PLA in such a large-scale military exercise that is specially tailored for an anti-invasion war indicates China's intention to learn more valuable combat practices and lift its ability for joint combat", Song said.
