US President Donald Trump is disputing official findings that almost 3000 people died in Puerto Rico as a result of last year's storms.

"I think that Puerto Rico was an incredible, unsung success", Trump said. "Then, a long time later, they started to report really large numbers, like 3000", Trump tweeted.

August 28, the government of Puerto Rico officially announced the death toll from Hurricane Maria as 2,975 making it the most severe natural disaster in the island's history. One thing's for sure, and I told (the media) before, one thing I'm proud, we're standing up on our own two feet.

The study concluded the initial death toll of 64 only included those killed directly by hurricanes Maria and Irma - either by drowning, flying debris or building collapse.

Cora indicated that the Puerto Rican people are continuing their efforts to a return to normalcy.

That number was produced by public health experts at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., in a report commissioned by the US territory's governor, Ricardo Rossello.

Hurricane Florence is the first major test of the Federal Emergency Management Agency since its much-criticized response to Maria, which caused devastation when it struck Puerto Rico as a Category 4 storm a year ago.

Colbert claimed that bad news of the GW study was pushed off the front pages by other Trump bad news.

"The US government's response in Puerto Rico fell far, and tragically, short".

San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz, a vocal Trump critic, slammed the President's tweet on Thursday, calling them "delusional, paranoid, and unhinged from any sense of reality".

Stewart was being interviewed Wednesday about Trump's earlier statements that his administration's handling of the hurricane that hit the USA territory was "an incredible, unsung success" and "one of the best jobs that's ever been done".

The president's comments come as his administration prepares to battle yet another potentially life-threatening storm with Hurricane Florence approaching the Carolina coast.

The statement from the Milken Institute School of Public Health said the study was commissioned by the government of Puerto Rico and was carried out "with complete independence and freedom from any kind of interference".

Instead, he argued, without providing evidence, that the death toll was a Democratic claim to make him look bad. Full power was restored in Puerto Rico following last year's storm only last month.

"I think these statements make him illegitimate as a president of the United States", she said. "It wasn't because this president doesn't care about Puerto Rico".

Gov. Rick Scott, also a friend of Trump's who's running as a Republican for U.S. Senate, declared in a tweet Thursday morning: "I disagree with @POTUS- an independent study said thousands were lost and Gov. Rosselló agreed". Brock on Thursday said that "if we made mistakes with the way a program was run, then we'll work.to get this corrected".
