California is launching its 'own damn satellite' to track climate pollutants

After a week in which cities and companies announced plans to speed action on global warming, a San Francisco climate summit ended Friday with host California promising to launch its own satellite to track major emissions sources.

Almost 500 chanting protesters blocked the intersections of 3rd and Howard St. and 3rd and Folsom St. under the watchful eye of a contingent of San Francisco police officers.

Some of the activists came as far away as North Dakota, Brazil and the Amazon. Many were part of a group that has challenged Brown throughout the year for what they see as having too close of a relationship with the oil industry.

"China has taken this Global Summit very, very seriously and we hope to build on that in months and years ahead as California, the USA and China's Jiangsu Province in particular will work even more closely to combat climate change", said the governor.

California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill into law on Monday calling for the state to run entirely on clean energy by 2045.

However, "some folks in the USA are not as eager because they don't feel it directly unless they're right next to drought or fire or floods or hurricanes or things like that", the young American scholar expressed her concern.

"Cap and trade hurts communities in places like Richmond, who will get the brunt of the excessive emissions that that scheme allows", Robinson said. "Cities all over the world are on the front lines of climate change", said Frank Jensen, lord mayor of Copenhagen, adding that the bicycle-friendly city wants even more bike lanes.

"I believe Jerry Brown that he will achieve 100 percent renewables, but that's not going to stop climate change".

Many centre on switching from cars and trucks powered by planet-warming fossil fuels to electric vehicles.

But California is just a state.

"But everyone here is saying (the opposite), like the mayors, the governors and the City Council".

Clashing with Trump, California governor says to launch climate satellite

It has also attracted celebrities, from actor Harrison Ford to primatologist Jane Goodall and musician Dave Matthew.

Members of the group 1000 Grandmothers protest outside the Moscone Center in San Francisco where the Global Climate Action Summit is being held, on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018. "Despite the lack of leadership from Washington, it's really about action".

"We have shut this summit down from the outside", demonstrator Dallas Goldtooth of the Indigenous Environmental Network told the crowd.

In response, the governor reiterated his ambitious goals for battling greenhouse gas emissions at all levels. The announcement from Brown's office did not contain an estimated cost or launch date.

"It's not much", she said. "We have the actual method of getting there".

The genesis of this summit can be traced to the 2015 Paris climate talks.

"This is sort of the real economy speaking for itself", Figueres said.

By the time the curtain raised on the summit, Gov.

Trump said the worldwide agreement was unfair to the United States and would hurt the economy.

But it was also clear that natural ways to store carbon need to be used more effectively quickly to deal with growing climate threats, he said.

The key for Canada is phasing out coal - the dirtiest fossil fuel - by 2030, said Canadian environment minister Catherine McKenna. "Everyone is acting on climate change not only because it is the right thing to do but also because there's a huge economic opportunity".
