Tiger Woods shot his lowest opening round in two decades - but still had to share the lead with Rory McIlroy at the BMW Championship in Philadelphia.

Woods moved to seven-under par with a birdie at his 10th hole.

His performances this season, which have included a brief lead in the final round of the Open Championship in July, have catapulted Woods up to 26th in the world rankings, a leap of more than 600 places since the end of a year ago as he recovered from spine fusion surgery.

Woods had not fired a better opening round in a PGA event since a 61 at the 1999 Byron Nelson Classic.

After a relatively low-key 69 on the first day, he found his touch in some style yesterday, overcoming a poor start that included bogey fives on the first and fourth to drain eight birdies in 14 holes.

McIlroy picked himself up quickly from a double bogey on the par-3 eighth hole with a 3-wood onto a green so soft on the par-5 ninth that it barely bounced forward and caught a slope down toward the pin, leaving him a short eagle putt.

McIlroy followed three consecutive early birdies with a remarkable six in a row mid-round which left him needing just two more to become only the 10th player in history to break 60 on the PGA Tour.

His only bogey came at the par-3 eighth, by far the most hard pin on the course.

I'm not sure it was purposeful, but it seemed like some of the best golfers playing Aronimink on Friday - like Woods and McIlroy - really struggled to get a feel for what it was doing or how to solve its speed.

"It was definitely in the back of your mind", Rose said, when asked about the possibility that the tournament may not resume. It's unlikely that he'll get US captain Jim Furyk's final selection next week, but if he wins by five or six in this field, who knows.

"I had two good chances the first two holes and didn't make them". "And I didn't capitalize".

" ... It was great to get off to a great start in the tournament". My body just remembers it.

"You don't get many opportunities to break 60 and today was one of them", he said.

Tiger said: "I hit it just as good and putted it just as good".

But the longest putt he made on day two at Aronimink was six feet.

Matsuyama, who is now 28th on the FedEx Cup points list, needs to remain in the top 30 to advance to the Tour Championship. Woods hit his approach to just over 13 feet from the hole and drilled the putt for his second birdie in three holes to tie for the early lead.
