On Sept. 20, the Vikings sent Griffen and his agent a letter telling their star defensive end he could not return to the team until he had a mental health evaluation.

According to police in Minnetrista, the suburb where he lives, Griffen was acting erratically and making comments about people trying to kill him. "It's about him getting better". No gun was seen, according to police, and Griffen was not arrested.

The nine-year veteran is now being evaluated and treated at a mental health facility after a number of incidents Saturday involving police and medical personnel, league sources told Paul Walsh of the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

KSTP reports Griffen, 30, was confronted by Minneapolis police officers on Saturday, following an alarming incident at the Hotel Ivy in downtown Minneapolis.

Elder did not confirm that Griffen was the individual cited in the report. On Saturday, the situation escalated to a point where Griffen allegedly threatened to assault hotel staff.

Griffen, 30, was arrested twice after his rookie season, the first incident coming January 28, 2011, when he was arrested in Los Angeles on suspicion of public intoxication.

Zimmer said he hasn't talked to Griffen since the Week 2 overtime game at Green Bay. Later, Tiffany received a call saying that Griffen had showed up at the home of Vikings cornerback Trae Waynes, shirtless.

Pico told police that when Griffen arrived at the hotel, he had forgotten that he had wanted to meet Pico, the report states.

Officers observed Griffen yelling, "about "777" and that he went to Waynes" house because "God made me do it.'" Griffen's wife told police that Everson's behavior happens from "time to time as he is fighting with "demons" in his head and that it's normal for him to run away". He agreed to be taken for mental health treatment, but the report says he fled the ambulance and later agreed to continue the trip with a police escort.

No weapon was found and Griffen was allowed to leave the property, per police.

"We have a very, very good support program".

Medics told police some deer had crossed the road in front of the ambulance and Griffen had jumped up and told them he feared being shot.

Griffen, a three-time Pro Bowler, did not play in Week 3 after being ruled out Friday with a knee injury.

"We are aware of the situation involving Everson Griffen and certainly concerned by what we have heard", Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said in a statement. He recently signed a four-year, $58 million extension that included a $2 million signing bonus and a total of $34 million in guaranteed money.
