Erdogan's Friday visit to Berlin has stirred considerable controversy in Germany, with many criticizing Merkel for hosting a leader which some in the country accuse of being increasingly authoritarian.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that the United States had taken the wrong path by threatening and using blackmail instead of dialogue, and said that it was impossible for any country to trust it.

Hundreds of people have gathered in the German city of Cologne to protest against a visit by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

But the German chancellor stressed that "deep differences" remained on civil rights and other issues.

Turkey demanded, during a meeting with armed opposition faction in Idlib, withdrawal from demilitarized zones, according to Sochi deal between Russian president Vladimir Putin and Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

He noted that Turkey lifted the state of emergency following the June 24 presidential and parliamentary elections in the country.

Merkel also announced that she planned to take part later in October in an Istanbul summit hosted by Erdogan on the crisis in Syria which also aims to include French President Emmanuel Macron and Russia's Vladimir Putin.

Dispensing with the usual diplomatic pleasantries, Mr Steinmeier expressed concern over Germans, union activists, lawyers, journalists and politicians jailed in Turkey, telling Mr Erdogan: "We can not simply gloss over this issue".

According to Erdogan, the Brunson case is just a pretext to implement a new set of sanctions on Turkey.

But he expressed satisfaction that "both sides made a cautious attempt at rapprochement".
